FIELD GUIDE / VISITOR READINESS
FROM PROMISE TO PERFORMANCE
The Visitor Readiness Framework
Many destinations don't have an experience shortage. They have a readiness problem.
Before you promote it, decide if it's ready.
PROMOTE
Ready enough to put in front of visitors.
DEVELOP
Worth pursuing, but conditions need work.
HOLD
Not ready for this promise right now.
What Visitor Readiness Means
Visitors experience the whole place, not the org chart.
A destination may market the promise, while its delivery depends on businesses, public spaces, infrastructure, staff, partners, events, transportation, wayfinding, and dozens of decisions made by other people.
Visitor Readiness asks one practical question:
Are the conditions behind the promise ready to deliver it?
THE GOVERNING MODEL
PROMISE → CAPACITY → CONDITIONS → DELIVERY → HUMAN EXPERIENCE → LEARNING
Readiness is governed before delivery, tested through experience, and improved through learning.
WHAT THE FRAMEWORK TESTS
THE PROMISE
What are we asking visitors to expect?
THE PEOPLE
Who has to deliver it?
THE CONDITIONS
What must be true for it to work?
THE JOURNEY
Does the experience hold together?
THE EVIDENCE
What tells us whether it actually worked?
The score is not the decision. It starts the decision.
THE READINESS DECISION
Every assessment ends with a decision:
PROMOTE
Ready for greater visibility.
DEVELOP
Worth pursuing. Conditions need work.
HOLD
Not ready for this promise yet.
WHO IT'S FOR
Destinations. Main Streets. Cultural organizations. Civic leaders. Experience operators.
If you're responsible for deciding what gets promoted, funded, developed, or put in front of visitors, Visitor Readiness is for you.
WHY NOW
84% of destination organizations are now involved in destination development, not just promotion.
As destinations take responsibility for more of the visitor experience, the question is no longer simply “Can we market this?”
It’s “Are we ready to deliver what we’re promising?”
